We had a beautiful, sunny and yet chilly day exploring a part of London we'd not ventured out to yet.
The tour began at Old Spitalfields Market which is a covered market that houses a different market every day of the week. There has been a market on the site for 350 years! You will find markets of all sorts including produce markets, cultural markets, arts and craft markets, designer markets, vintage fairs, etc. There are delicious looking restaurants and trendy shops in and around Old Spitalfields Market as well. We did not spend much time at all within the market but it will be a place we venture back to very soon. It looks like a wonderful place to spend any morning!
When you come visit London be sure to check their events page to plan which day you'd like to attend based on the markets happening while in town.
Our first stop was St. John Bread and Wine for their Old Spot Bacon Sandwich.
I'm not that big of a fan of bacon but OH. MY. It was beyond amazing!
Next stop was The English Restaurant for their bread and butter pudding with rum custard.
This was my first time trying bread pudding here in London and it did not disappoint. M tried a bite before I added the rum custard.
Our third stop was Androuet Cheese Shop where we tried a English cheddar and an English Stilton cheese. I've never actually tried blue cheese- it's always scared me. I tried it...and I actually liked it!
(I guess M gets the lack of desire to try new foods from me!)
The shop was delightfully stinky- just as a cheese shop should be!
The cheese stop was followed by fish and chips at Poppies.
Honestly this stop was a let down. We'd had better fish and chips at several places in London. The restaurant felt very touristy and not really our cup of tea.
However, M did enjoy the chips- just as she does everywhere we go that has them.
After eating the fish and chips, we did some walking and learned a bit of history about the neighborhood. It's one of those neighborhoods in London that has become very trendy and popular in the last few years.
M played a bit of piano with her good buddy, Tiger.
And we met Lenny, the resident pub cat. Pub cats are apparently a thing in London.
Following the pub we had a few bites of yummy Indian food.
We tried a madras, a vegetable curry and a lamb dish. I don't do lamb so Davis had my portion.
Our 7th stop was a well known beigel shop (or bagel for those of you never seen that spelling). I would have preferred something with cream cheese but it was still tasty.
Finally. We made it to dessert- a salted caramel tart. Deeelicious!
And of course, M had to try this one. Smart girl. If it's dessert, she will usually not hesitate.
A stroller nap on our way home = a successful morning out and about!
Overall we had a great time on the tour and were not too full by the end of it. There are quite a few other food tours in London and some other European cities have them too. It is a great way to taste some of the cuisine in the city you are visiting, learn some history all while seeing parts of the city you may not have thought about visiting.
Some of the other food tours that I found in London include:
London from Scratch
Walk Eat Talk Eat
Foodies London
Cheers!

this sounds so fun! it's added to my ever-growing list of things to do here ;)
ReplyDeleteDefinitely something to do with visitors or just you, Pete and J. Hey, maybe we can do another together (Father's Day!) and the girls can play while we EAT!
