Adventures with Nana

One of the days my mom was visiting London, we took a trip to see The Prime Meridian of the world. Every place on Earth is measured in terms of its distance east or west from the Greenwich Meridian. The line divides the eastern and western hemispheres of the Earth, just as the Equator divides the northern and southern hemispheres.

Why you ask? Well...my mom likes to take her travel advice from good old Rick Steves (AND I sure like to poke fun at her for it!) and if Rick says it should be visited while in London, well then, it shall! I was not very excited about seeing this line but hey, it turned out to be one of our best days playing tourist yet.

We started the day early and hopped on a speedy boat near the Embankment station. The boat transported us down the Thames River to Greenwich and along the way you see Big Ben, Westminster Abby, The London Eye, St. Paul's Cathedral and Tower Bridge. It's a beautiful ride!

Once we got off the boat in Greenwich, it was a beautiful walk up to the Royal Observatory where The Prime Meridian is located.

Yup. That's it!

This was my oooh, how exciting is this face- just for my mom's sake!

After taking our turns standing on sides of the line, we had a yummy pub lunch at The Plume of Feathers. A super kid friendly pub!

Passed by the Cutty Sark on our way out of town. It just so happened to catch on (a small) fire the very next day.

We hopped back on the boat in Greenwich and disembarked at The Tower of London to see the incredible display of poppies commemorating the 100 years since the first day of Britain's full involvement in World War I. There were 888,246 ceramic poppies filling the moat each representing a British military fatality. The poppies were on display for about 4 months before they were all sold and split equally between 6 service charities. It was quite a sight to see.

Then we walked over the Tower Bridge to the other side of the river and therefore our side of London.

Thanks for following Rick Steve's London advice mom! It was a fun day! xoxo

Cheers!
Kelley
